Chautauqua

Chautauqua was a highly popular social movement in the late 19th and early 20th centuries that brought cultural entertainment to rural and pioneer towns.
Featured guests included speakers, teachers, musicians, entertainers, storytellers, preachers, and interesting specialists of the day.
Mount Dora's Chautauqua was located mainly in the Sylvan Shores area but had venues in other locations as well.

Representation of Moonshine Still
of Calvin Calhoun
During the Prohibition of the 1920's Florida became an easy destination for shipments of rum and whiskey from Cuba and Canada . Some residents of Mount Dora attempted to make some quick (if illegal) profits from their own 'moonshine' whiskey. This is an example of the kind of makeshift still the amateurs would use. It is on display next to the jail cell.
Moonshine gets its name from the fact that moonshine producers and smugglers would often work at night (i.e. under the light of the moon) to avoid arrest for producing illegal liquor.
